I'm Beck Wise, a rhetorician and writing scholar at the University of Queensland, where I lecture in Professional Writing.

As a researcher, I work at the intersection of technical and professional communication, visual rhetoric, and feminist theory. I investigate how medical claims and images are deployed in public debates about social justice issues, using methodologies that combine feminist rhetorical criticism with science and technology studies. Right now, I'm working on a book manuscript about how medical imaging is used to support claims about human rights, gender, race and ability. I also research writing pedagogy, with a focus on online writing instruction for large multimajor cohorts.

As a teacher, I specialise in technical and professional communication, multimodal writing, and writing in the disciplines. I teach undergraduate and postgraduate classes in all of these areas, and am committed to developing innovative, inclusive and rigorous classes to support my students' success.

I have previously worked as a writer and editor for print and digital publications, and bring this professional experience to my academic work.
